The festive season is arguably the busiest time of the year for the theatre industry with families filling up auditoriums across the country for an unforgettable Christmas treat, be it a traditional pantomime or something a little more alternative.
For programming managers, there’s a lot to consider when choosing a Christmas show. Katy Snelling, head of programming at NST, says, “Dark winter nights are the perfect time for stories and, when combined with families having time to spend together, it's no surprise that this often comes in the form of a trip to the theatre over the Christmas holidays.
“Be it to the traditional pantomime or a show such as Hetty Feather the best productions have shared ingredients to create theatrical magic; a fun hero or heroine who goes on an amazing adventure making friends along the way, lively songs that you'll be singing for days, colourful sets to spark the imagination and a happy ending to warm the heart.
“When we're looking for a show to present at NST each Christmas we look for all these qualities but with an added extra. Hetty Feather, based on the book by Jacqueline Wilson, incorporates circus skills, aerial work and fantastic live music to tell the tale of the abandoned tomboy determined to find her true mother. She's a plucky, brave and very cheeky protagonist and great fun to be around.
“That's another thing on our must have list for a Christmas show - FUN! It's the time of year we're at our busiest and when people often come to us for the very first time. We want everyone to have a great and magical experience so work hard to ensure that the building is looking its best, the ushers have their biggest smiles and the ice creams are the tastiest available.”
