A replica full size Supermarine Spitfire F Mk IX, affectionately known as ‘Our Lucy’, will land in Guildhall Square, Southampton, on Friday 16 February, as part of the opening celebrations for Southampton’s brand new arts venues, Nuffield Southampton Theatres City (NST City), John Hansard Gallery and City Eye.
The Spitfire, provided by Lytham St Annes Spitfire Display Team and funded by Go Southampton, is an exact replica of the Spitfire originally built at Eastleigh, Hampshire, with many of its original instruments and controls as well as added sound and light features to give the would be pilot a real feel for life as a WW2 Fighter Pilot. The Spitfire will be minded by a living history crew of four.
The Supermarine Spitfire F Mk IX was initially to be Mk IA/B but was eventually built as a F Mk IX. The first flight of this type was on 31 August 1942.
Members of the public will have the opportunity to sit in the Spitfire on Saturday 17 February, the second day of NST’s opening weekend ‘Southampton Celebrates’, between 11am and 5pm.
