City Coming Soon

Later this year, Nuffield Southampton Theatres will take over a second venue, NST CITY, in Guildhall Square in Southampton’s city centre.

This state-of-the-art performing arts building situated in the heart of the city’s cultural quarter will comprise a flexible 450 seat auditorium, a 137 seat studio theatre, a sprung-floor rehearsal space, workshop, rehearsal rooms and a bar and restaurant.

We will continue to run our current venue at the University of Southampton’s Highfield Campus. To distinguish between our two venues we have introduced NST City and NST Campus to reflect the location of each of our spaces.

Our plans for NST City are taking shape as the building work progresses. Keep up to date with all our latest news through our monthly e-newsletters.

View From Stage Main House

Opening hours

NST are planning to open NST CITY every day of the week, from approximately 8.30am – 11pm (although there may be some variations day-to-day). The box office is currently planned to open at 10am and close at 8pm, or half an hour after the start of the final performance of the night. The café/bar will hold approximately 80 covers and will be open all day every day, and event catering can be arranged on request.

Main house

Our main house is an entirely flexible space and can be configured in a number of different ways:

End on - seating capacity 450;

In the round – seating capacity 376;

Thrust – seating capacity 285;

Traverse – seating capacity 252.

Each of the totals above (excluding traverse) includes some seats in our balcony. In the end on configuration there is capacity to create a pit in front of the stage, which removes 100 seats. The stage in the main house is 9.1m deep by 15 wide; there are no wings or a proscenium arch but these can be created for a specific performance. The main stage also has a full height fly tower.

Studio

The studio space is a black box with an end on capacity of 137. The seating will be bleacher seats that retract against the wall, leaving space for a more informal arrangement of tables and chairs, or similar, should that be required. A stage area can also be created, if required.

We will be keeping everyone informed of our launch programme through our monthly e-newsletters.
