See Southampton: Vaults and Vino

11 December, 2017

    Presented by See Southampton

NST acts as a Ticketing Agency for this event

See Southampton offers an evening guided walk of some of the underground vaults, followed by a wine-tasting session at the award winning Dancing Man Brewery. You will visit part of the medieval town and experience wine-tasting in an iconic 14th century building.

Qualified guides and wine connoisseurs: Ms Katie Santos and Mr Godfrey Collyer

    Please drink responsibly.

In the 13th century, Southampton had become a leading port and was particularly involved in trade: French wine was imported and wool was exported.

Stone vaults were built as wine cellars to store wine from France. In most cases, wine cellars were located underground, and the merchant himself lived upstairs. As time went by, some of the vaults went on to be used as shops, showrooms, storage, coal cellars and WWII air-raid shelters.

This tour will include a one hour walk, in which you will have the opportunity to learn about the stories related to the wine trade in Southampton, and visit a few medieval vaults which were once used to store French wine.

The walk will be lead by a qualified Southampton Green Badge guide.

By the end, you will have an idea about the wine in Southampton, where the barrels were stored, and what people would have drunk back in the 1200s and 1300s!

Then a further hour will be spent sampling a variety of wines (and nibbles!) selected and presented by the Sommelier of the famous Wool House, now a Brewery called The Dancing Man.

If you wish to stay on for dinner, please do contact The Dancing Man directly to book a table.
