NST will open Southampton's new city centre performing arts venue, NST City, on 15 February 2018 with the world premiere of Howard Brenton's The Shadow Factory.
This new state-of-the-art venue will include a flexible 450 seat main house theatre, a 133 seat studio, screening facilities, a sprung-floor rehearsal room and workshop spaces.
NST City will also include a bar and restaurant managed by Mettricks, winner of Southampton’s 2017 Business of the Year award: Tyrrells.
NST will run NST City alongside its existing theatre, NST Campus, on the University of Southampton’s Highfield Campus.
As part of its campaign to reach as many people in Southampton as it can with its opening news, NST is asking the people of Southampton to share the message “Southampton Can Do It” on social media. Click here to find out how you can get involved.

NST CITY will be open every day of the week, from approximately 8.30am – 11pm (although there may be some variations day-to-day). The box office is currently scheduled to open at 10am and close at 8pm, or half an hour after the start of the final performance of the night. The café/bar will hold approximately 80 covers and will be open all day every day. Event catering can also be arranged on request.
Our main house is an entirely flexible space and can be configured in a number of different ways:
End on - seating capacity 450;
In the round – seating capacity 376;
Thrust – seating capacity 285;
Traverse – seating capacity 252.
Each of the totals above (excluding traverse) includes some seats in our balcony. In the end on configuration there is capacity to create a pit in front of the stage, which removes 100 seats. The stage in the main house is 9.1m deep by 15 wide; there are no wings or a proscenium arch but these can be created for a specific performance. The main stage also has a full height fly tower.
The studio space is a black box with an end on capacity of 133. The seating will be bleacher seats that retract against the wall, leaving space for a more informal arrangement of tables and chairs, or similar, should that be required. A stage area can also be created, if required.
We will be keeping everyone informed of our launch programme through our monthly e-newsletters.
