Nubya Garcia, 26, a London based saxophonist, graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance having studied Jazz Performance in 2016. Prior to that, she was fortunate to be immersed in Jazz through London youth music courses such as Tomorrow’s Warriors, Camden Music Service, Royal Academy of Music Junior Jazz, and further afield at Berklee’s 5 Week Summer Program. Nubya brings her own style, perspective and sound to her compositions and playing that encapsulates the diverse influences that are defining the new wave of jazz-influenced sounds sweeping across the UK today.
Since graduating, Nubya fearlessly threw herself into her debut recording with a clear vision of what she wanted and was meticulous in her pursuit of her sound; this was released with Jazz re:freshed in May 2017. Enlisting the help of fellow musical comrades, Nubya tapped into well-seasoned, harmonious relationships with players that know and understand her - and this joyful union radiates through her compositions. Leading her own project, Nubya has recently played Singapore Jazz Festival, New York’s Winter Jazz Fest, Worldwide Festival and Ronnie Scott’s. This year she was awarded the Steve Reid Foundation Award that has provided her the mentorship to begin to experimenting with composing and performing with live electronics.
